The first third of Book Two is occupied with the events leading up to Dick and Barbara's wedding, which adds to the sense of an ongoing story rather than stand alone tales with a shared continuity. After the wedding, the focus returns to the Bruce/Selina relationship as it changes and develops. While drama and angst become a bit more present, it remains a lighthearted comedy spirit at heart, and closer to a fan fiction moniker than the later books. By the end of Awkward Pauses, a more mature tone takes hold and the sophistication of the characterization and themes becomes evident.
