Short Tales is a trio of interrelated Gotham stories that begins with a flashback to the night the Iceberg burned at the end of Riddle Me-Tropolis. It is a filler piece and though fun, it would have been omitted if it hadn't introduced two critical elements that would become emblems of The Tales: Selina's Lamborghini and The Z.
In Batman Begins, Bruce Wayne drives a Lamborghini Murcielago, a nice touch since murcielago is Spanish for "bat." In 2007, Lamborghini introduced a limited edition car called the Reventon, which Cat-Tales referenced in this story. Bruce has to have one, as it is not only a hot car in its own right, it is patterned after a jet fighter. Historically so is the Batmobile. Unable to buy it for himself, he buys it for Selina. She gets it in purple, and it will become a feature of the Tales from this story on. The Reventon, though a limited edition car itself, was never meant to be the beginning and end of that car, and it evolved in later years into the Aventador, the model Bruce will then drive in The Dark Knight Rises.
In the sole instance of a fun and light moment indicative of the Catwoman Cat-Tales fans crave, Selina steals it. The episode concludes with a laugh line where Bruce learns she has posed as his wife, not only foreshadowing the films end but providing a sadly misleading sequence for the trailers that caused one reader to post it in forums with the descriptor "Selina my dear, this is for you." (And what a lovely movie it might have been if that advertisement was at all representative of the movie to come.)
The Z are (SPOILER ALERT) a collective of former henchmen who go into the business of building lairs and death traps for theme rogues. They will even raise the funds by performing some elementary thefts, for a fee. The catch is that there is a fee for everything. They pad their clients bills with outrageous add-ons that will not only become a running gag in future tales, it will inspire a spin off story Don't Fear the Z by Random Equinox to go with the Book 6 opening novella Don't Fear the Joker.
Like all Cat-Tales, Short Tales can be read online on the Cat-Tales website or mobile mirror, and can be downloaded as an ebook or pdf, which is sized for printing at Cafe Press. It is collected in Cat-Tales Book 5.
